Tom Brokaw, Katie Couric and Bill Moyers are to be rotating hosts of a live, nightly news and talk program on MSNBC, the 24-hour news cable channel that will start in July. The program, which will also include regular NBC correspondents, is one of three nightly prime-time programs announced yesterday by Andrew Lack, president of NBC News. MSNBC is run jointly by NBC and the Microsoft Corporation. The two other programs will be an evening newscast with interview and discussion segments, and a program on new media and technology, with the television unit of Ziff-Davis Publishing as co-producer.

The shares of Data Dimensions Inc. rose yesterday for a second day after the billionaire investor George Soros and his affiliates bought an 8.08 percent stake in the computer consulting company. Shares of the company, based in Bellevue, Wash., rose $5.625, to $39.25, in Nasdaq trading. The shares are up 40 percent since Monday. Data Dimensions is working on a solution to the so-called millennium crisis. Many of the world's mainframe computers are not prepared to recognize dates after Dec. 31, 1999.

The board of the Alco Standard Corporation approved a plan yesterday to split into two publicly traded companies: one to sell and lease office equipment and the other to distribute paper products. The company, based in Wayne, Pa., also said its second-quarter earnings rose 45 percent. Since early February, Alco has been considering a plan to split its Ikon Office Solutions unit and its Unisource paper products division. Alco shares rose 37.5 cents yesterday, to $54.125, on the New York Stock Exchange.

Tower Automotive Inc. signed a letter of intent yesterday to acquire Mascotech Inc.'s Stamping Technologies Inc. unit for about $80 million, the companies said yesterday. Mascotech expects to receive about $55 million in cash and the remainder in stock and notes. The Mascotech unit, which is based in Rochester Hills, Mich., has annual sales of about $190 million. Tower Automotive, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., makes engineered metal stampings and assemblies for light vehicle manufacturers in North America. Mascotech is an affiliate of the Masco Corporation of Taylor, Mich.

The Bristol-Myers Squibb Company said yesterday that it planned to make a $10 million investment in the Somatix Therapy Corporation, a biotechnology company, bringing its total investment in the company to $20 million. In exchange, Bristol-Myers, the pharmaceutical concern, has first rights to collaborate with Somatix on any cancer products it develops. Somatix, which is based in Alameda, Calif., is developing gene-therapy products to treat cancer and Parkinson's disease. Bristol-Myers, which is based in New York, made an initial investment of $10 million in Somatix last August. Somatix's stock fell 50 cents yesterday, to close at $7.625 a share on the Nasdaq stock market.
