The Tokyo branch of the Security Pacific National Bank lost about $18.2 million in speculative foreign exchange trading in March, a spokesman for the California bank said. The losses occurred after a dealer at the bank sold dollars when the United States currency was surging against European currencies, touching off losses on those positions, the spokesman said. The Los Angeles-based Security Pacific National Bank, a unit of the Security Pacific Corporation group, is the first foreign bank to report such huge losses in the Tokyo currency market, foreign exchange traders said.

Synergen's Drug

Synergen Inc., a biological products company, said the Food and Drug Administration had granted orphan drug status to its SLPI product for treating cystic fibrosis and a congenital defect responsible for genetic emphysema. Orphan drug status provides market exclusivity for a product in the United States for seven years. It is meant as an incentive for companies to develop new drugs. Synergen stock rose $2.25 a share today, to $33, in over-the-counter trading.

Chiron Acquisition

The Chiron Corporation, a maker of medical products, said a subsidiary, Chiron Ophthalmic Inc., Irvine, Calif., had acquired a majority interest in Adatomed G.m.b.H. of Munich, Germany, a leading supplier of ophthalmic surgical products. Adatomed will remain under German management but will work closely with Chiron Ophthalmic to coordinate research and marketing between the United States and Europe, Chiron said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Adatomed employs 75 people and had 1990 sales of $6.7 million.

The Ball Corporation, a packaging and aerospace concern, said it had signed an agreement with the lenders of Ball Packaging Products Canada Inc., its joint venture, to purchase their interest in the joint venture for $120 million. Included in the purchase were all of the bank loans and related security interests issued by Ball Canada, as well as all of Ball Canada's shares that had been pledged to its lenders. Ball shares added 12.5 cents on the New York Stock Exchange today, closing at $26.375.

Toshiba Acquisition

The Toshiba Corporation of Japan said its American unit had acquired the Vertex Semiconductor Corporation, a maker of computer chips based in San Jose, Calif., for about $20 million. Toshiba said Vertex had proposed the acquisition to obtain financing to develop its technology. Vertex, which was called Integrated CMOS Systems until last summer, will keep its name, management structure and line of business, Toshiba said.

Cadence Design Systems Inc., a maker of software for computer-aided design systems, said two shareholders had filed a class-action lawsuit contending that the company violated Federal securities laws in its public statements and financial reports in the first quarter of the year. Damages are not specified in the suit, the company said. Cadence, based in San Jose, said that it had not yet been served with the complaint, but that it had obtained a copy and thought it to be without merit and that it would contest. Cadence's shares gained 75 cents each on the New York Stock Exchange today to close at $26.125.
