Bids by Owners Sought for Control of Gucci

Maurizio Gucci, who owns 50 percent of the Gucci luxury-goods businesses, said today that he wanted the Investcorp Group, owner of the other half, to bid against him for full control of the company. The long-simmering dissension between the two partners burst into public recriminations last week, when Investcorp filed a lawsuit and an arbitration claim against Mr. Gucci to prevent him from selling his stake or pledging it as collateral without first allowing the investment company to bid for it.

COCA-COLA TO SELL MERCHANDISE BY CATALOGUE

NATIONSBANK UNIT GRANTED UNDERWRITING PRIVILEGES

The Federal Reserve Board granted permission yesterday for the Capital Markets unit of the Nationsbank Corporation to underwrite stock and bond offerings on a limited basis. The unit will initially underwrite debt securities and does not intend to underwrite or deal in equities for at least a year, the Fed said. Nationsbank of Charlotte, N.C., is the fourth United States banking company to win permission to underwrite both corporate equity and debt. The others are J. P. Morgan & Company, the Bankers Trust New York Corporation, and the Dauphin Deposit Corporation, a small bank holding company in Harrisburg, Pa. Nationsbank shares yesterday rose 75 cents, to $49.75, on the New York Stock Exchange.

A.T.& T. INTRODUCES CELLULAR SIGNALING NETWORK

The American Telephone and Telegraph Company introduced a signaling service yesterday that would let customers complete cellular phone calls without having to dial access codes when traveling outside their calling areas. Nynex Mobile Communications, SNET Cellular and U.S. Cellular will be the first companies to use A.T.& T.'s cellular signaling network, in a four-month trial expected to begin in September.

Home Depot Inc. said yesterday that it and the McDonald's Corporation were discussing the possibility of a joint venture to open McDonald's fast-food restaurants inside Home Depot stores. Home Depot of Atlanta, now operates 227 stores in 21 states and expects to have 645 outlets in the United States and Canada by 1997. McDonald's of Oak Brook, Ill., the world's largest restaurant chain, has expanded into non-traditional sites for years. Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nation's biggest retailer, is testing scaled-down versions of McDonald's restaurants in two outlets in California.

APPLE SHIPS LOWER-PRICED FILE SERVERS

Apple Computer Inc. shipped two more models of the network server line that it introduced last quarter. The new machines -- the Workgroup Server 60 and 80 -- cost $2,949 to $3,899 and $5,489 to $9,049, respectively, less than Apple's first two servers, the Workgroup Server 95 machines, which cost $7,598 and $12,989. File servers are computers that store files and programs used by all computers on a network. Apple sold no servers of its own until the Workgroup line.

LORAL UNIT TO BUILD SATELLITES FOR TELE-COMMUNICATIONS

A unit of Tele-Communications Inc. awarded a contract worth more than $400 million yesterday to a division of the Loral Corporation for the construction of two television satellites that will apply digitization and video compression technology to help expand the number of channels broadcast to United States homes. Space Systems/Loral is to deliver the satellites in orbit in June and October 1996 to Tempo, a unit of Tele-Communications. Loral shares closed up 87.5 cents, to $59.375, on the New York Stock Exchange, while Tele-Communications shares rose $1, to $24.25, in Nasdaq trading.

REICHMANN FAMILY MEMBERS BUY OLYMPIA LEASING UNIT

Philip Reichmann and Frank Hauer said yesterday that they had agreed to acquire the leasing arm of Olympia & York Developments Ltd., the troubled Canadian real estate empire, for an undisclosed amount of cash. Through a company that they own, Mr. Reichmann and Mr. Hauer will acquire Olympia & York's 90 percent stake in O.& Y. Properties Inc. The unit manages 10 million square feet in 10 office buildings in Toronto, Calgary and Ottawa.
