Times Using Photocomposition To Produce Its Classified Pages

NY Times on Aug 18 begins producing its classified ad pages by photocomposition, eliminating traditional Linotype machines and 'hot type'; change, which is expected to produce savings in both business and production expenses, was accomplished 1 yr after ITU agreed to introduction of automated typesetting techniques; under automated system, selecting and sorting of classified ads for typical Sunday issue of Times, which used to take 3 days, can now be accomplished in 20 mins, according to John Werner, dir of pre-press operations; eventually, entire newspaper, including news articles, will be set in type in this manner (M)
