SHAPIRO AIMS FOR NEWS COVERAGE

For 12 hours Peter Shapiro campaigned tirelessly, rushing up and down the New Jersey Turnpike, emerging from his car six times during the course of a recent day to deliver his message. Instead of pumping hands and speaking to throngs of people at each stop, Mr. Shapiro, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, stopped only twice to talk to voters, and saw only about 100 in all. Rather, in his carefully choreographed outings, Mr. Shapiro, making his first try for statewide office, has been aiming to reach thousands of people through radio and television. The candidate has been eager to widen his appeal outside Essex County, where he is County Executive, so on his four other stops this campaign day, he met with newspaper editors and answered questions on radio and television shows.

Hostages and Hijackers Efforts to extradite a Palestinian for planning the seizure of the Achille Lauro were virtually given up by the Reagan Administration. The Palestinian guerrilla leader, Mohammed Abbas, fled to Yugoslavia from Rome on Saturday. Administration officials said they expected Yugoslavia to confirm formally Monday that it would not hold the Palestinian in custody, nor would it extradite him. This information was given informally to the United States, Justice Department officials said. [Page A1, Column 6.] Italy's release of a Palestinian against Washington's express wish was being explained by the Government of Prime Minister Bettino Craxi as necessary to avert a collapse of its ties with the Arab world. There were strong indications that Italy feared a sharp outburst of Palestinian terrorism if it had handed over Mohammed Abbas, leader of a faction of the Palestine Liberation Front, to the United States. ARAB PAPERS ASSERT U.S. EMBARRASSED ITS FRIENDS

The United States interception of an Egyptian airliner carrying the four Palestinian hijackers of the Achille Lauro cruise ship has angered Washington's conservative allies in the Arab world, according to newspapers in the region. Arab political analysts say they see the American action as a new dimension in the Middle East situation that could seriously jeopardize Washington's position in Arab nations that are considered firm United States allies. Student demonstrations on Saturday in Cairo against the interception, they said, could be an example of what could happen in other Arab countries, undercutting the position of Governments that have chosen to cooperate with the United States. Arabs already opposed to the United States appeared to be pleased by the strain the incident has produced in relations between Washington and Cairo.

A FTER a magazine circulated by the Flynt Distributing Company had published a nude photo and had incorrectly identified the nude as the author Jackie Collins, she sued Flynt for invasion of privacy. Her lawyer said the photo had been republished twice despite a court order against this.

Of Mites and Bees

A MITE that lodges in the windpipes of honeybees and saps their strength by sucking out body fluids was threatening the multibillion-dollar bee industry in the United States. The mite, Acarapis woodi, was believed to have entered from Mexico, and by last October it was reported to have invaded bee colonies in six states, including New York.

Fetchick Winner On 63d Birthday

Mike Fetchick won his first Senior PGA Tour event on his 63d birthday today, shooting an even-par 72 for a 6-under total of 210 in the $200,000 Hilton Head Seniors Invitational. Fetchick, a six-year veteran on the Seniors tour, dropped a 15-foot birdie putt at the par-5 18th hole to seal a two-shot victory over Al Chandler, Orville Moody and Gene Littler.
