International A fire in a South African gold mine killed at least 44 miners with toxic gas and left 154 men missing underground, according to the mine owners. More than 180 people were reported under treatment after escaping or being rescued from the gas fumes. [ Page A1, Column 6. ] A Soviet offer on war prevention will be explored by the United States at a 35-country East-West conference in Stockholm. President Reagan has decided to take up the Soviet proposal on monitoring troop movements from the air by observers using planes of the host country. [ A1:3. ]

International A bomb killed five Parisians and wounded 50 in front of a crowded department store on the Left Bank. The police said the bomb had been hurled from a passing car in the most deadly of five terrorist attacks to shake Paris in 10 days. The bombing occurred despite a general mobilization of security forces and an intensive police hunt for those responsible for the terrorism. [ Page A1, Column 6. ] The bombing stunned Parisians more than the previous four attacks and generated panic in a city celebrated for its civilized openness. A taxi driver of Arab origin, dazed by the carnage on the Rue de Rennes, exclaimed, ''My God, it looked like Beirut. Beirut on the Seine.'' [ A1:5. ]

The Cineplex Odeon Corporation said it had completed the previously announced acquisition of RKO Century Warner Theaters Inc. from MCA Inc. for $179 million in cash, stock and notes. RKO Century Warner operates 97 movie screens at 42 locations in the New York City area.

The United Technologies Corporation has agreed to sell its 26-story headquarters in downtown Hartford to Colonial Realty of Hartford for more than $100 million. United Technologies will continue to lease 25 percent of the 600,000-square-foot building from Colonial, a commercial and residential realty company.

The California investor Theodore H. Kruttschnitt raised his stake in the Horn & Hardart Company to about 10 percent, or 1.43 million shares, from 7.6 percent. Mr. Kruttschnitt reiterated a previous statement that he might seek control of the Las Vegas-based food-service and mail-order concern. Between Aug. 7 and Sept. 16, Mr. Kruttschnitt bought 349,700 shares for $11.88 to $14.88 a share.

The Texas Air Corporation and Continental Airlines Inc. said that they had revised the terms of Texas Air's bid to acquire the shares of Continental that Texas Air does not already own. Under the proposed agreement, Continental common stock would be exchanged for $15.20 a share. The prior agreement called for each share to be exchanged for Texas air senior notes with a face value of $14.75.

The Twistee Treat Corporation said it had agreed with Metro Treat Inc. to develop up to 400 new Twistee Treat stores in the New York metropolitan area. Twistee Treat said it would receive $1 million as a nonrefundable performance deposit and 30 stores must be opened in the first year, followed by 50 a year for the next seven years in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Twistee Treat is an operator and franchiser of ice cream stores in Florida.

The General Electric Credit Corporation, a unit of the General Electric Company, said it intends to acquire 80 percent of the Polaris Aircraft Leasing Corporation, one of the nation's largest independent aircraft leasing companies. G.E. Credit said the acquisition of privately owned Polaris, which manages a $760 million portfolio of commercial jets leased to 15 airlines, would permit G.E. to enter the aircraft leasing business. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The state-owned pension fund for the province of Quebec, Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec, said it had reduced its stake in Alcan Aluminium Ltd. to 6.7 percent, or 6.76 million shares, from 7.3 percent.
