News Corp. Buys On-Line Network

Rupert Murdoch's media conglomerate, the News Corporation, said yesterday that it had agreed to acquire Delphi Internet Services Inc., the fifth-largest on-line computer service in the United States. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Acquiring Delphi will enable the News Corporation to offer many of its newspapers and magazines in electronic form, much as America Online Inc., the fourth-largest service, offers Time magazine, The Chicago Tribune, USA Today and The San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News. Access to such content, and the financial resources of Mr. Murdoch's organization, could help Delphi catch up with far larger competitors, such as Prodigy and Compuserve.

A New Life For Cartoons

For the first time in 15 years, new artwork and stories for an array of Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters are set to be published. A joint venture was announced today between Turner Broadcasting System Inc., which controls the Hanna-Barbera Entertainment Company's stable of cartoon characters, and Harvey Comics Entertainment Inc. The venture will produce 120 new comic books in the next three years.

FERROFLUIDICS BOARD IS URGED TO OUST CHIEF

The Ferrofluidics Corporation, based in Nashua, N.H., said yesterday that its board was considering a recommendation by an internal investigative committee that it dismiss Ronald Moskowitz as chairman, president and chief executive. The committee has accused Mr. Moskowitz of breaking securities laws and acting without board approval, Ferrofluidics said.

AUCTION IS PLANNED FOR NEXT COMPUTER'S FACTORY

Next Computer Inc.'s modern computer factory in Fremont, Calif., will go on the auction block on Sept. 15. The company, which stopped making its money-losing work stations in February, has hired the Ross-Dove Company, a Foster City, Calif., auctioneer, to sell everything from the cafeteria to robotic manufacturing equipment, plus "large quantities" of Next work stations. Next, based in Redwood City, Calif., is a closely held company set up by Steven Jobs in 1985 after he left Apple Computer Inc.

IOWA-ILLINOIS UNIT ACQUIRES DKM RESOURCES

The Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company, based in Davenport, Iowa, said yesterday that its oil and gas unit had bought all the outstanding capital stock of DKM Resources Inc., a privately held oil and gas acquisition company, for more than $50 million. Iowa-Illinois said the transaction doubled the reserve base of its Medallion Production Company, an oil and gas concern based in Tulsa, Okla. The company has acquired reserves worth more than $66 million over the last year and a half.

HUMANA TO GET $248 MILLION FROM FORMER SUBSIDIARY

Galen Health Care Inc. will pay $248 million to its former parent, Humana Inc., to settle the remaining outstanding debt between the two companies. The accelerated payment on promissory notes owed to Humana comes as Galen merges with the Columbia Hospital Corporation of Fort Worth. The merger took effect yesterday, and the new company is called the Columbia Healthcare Corporation.

CONTRACT WITH FORD LIFTS CODE-ALARM'S STOCK PRICE

Lanston Officer Stepping Down

James A. Rice, president of Aubrey G. Lanston & Company, said yesterday that he would leave the firm on Dec. 31. Mr. Rice, 45, joined the firm in 1981 from the Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corporation. He was named president of Lanston and elected to its board in December 1990. He declined to say why he was leaving and said he did not have any plans beyond completing his work at the firm.

Phar-Mor Inc.'s independent examiner said today that he had submitted his report on the discount drugstore chain's $360 million accounting scam to the bankruptcy court supervising Phar-Mor. Jay Alix, who was appointed by United States Bankruptcy Judge William Bodoh in October to investigate Phar-Mor's accounting fraud, handed in his report on Tuesday to the Federal Bankruptcy Court here.

Roy Speer, who resigned as chairman of Home Shopping Network Inc. last month amid criminal allegations, will continue working for the company as a $500,000-a-year consultant for the next five years, company documents show. The cable-television retailer, which is based here, would not say what type of consulting services Mr. Speer would provide. The company's proxy statement for its Sept. 28 annual meeting of shareholders also said that Gerald Hogan, Home Shopping president and chief executive, would receive a four-year package worth about $5.8 million.
