The judge in the O. J. Simpson murder case refused today to let reporters see three photographs of the bloodied bodies of Mr. Simpson's former wife and a friend of hers outside her town house, where they were stabbed to death on the night of June 12. In his written response to a request by several news organizations that had sought access to those and other photographs of the crime scene, the judge said that releasing the three photos of the victims -- one of Nicole Brown Simpson and two of her friend, Ronald L. Goldman -- would create "a virtual certainty that the defendant's right to a fair trial will be prejudiced."

Stocks followed bonds higher yesterday, after a smaller-than-expected rise in July consumer prices stirred hopes that the Federal Reserve would be less aggressive in raising interest rates next week. "I'm not so sure it's a lock the Fed will now raise rates," said Bruce Bittles, market strategist for J. C. Bradford & Company in Nashville. The Federal Open Market Committee, which sets monetary policy, will meet on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Congress is poised to award the Raytheon Company a contract for about $55 million to build an upgraded missile for its Patriot system, keeping alive a project the Pentagon had nearly killed, The Boston Globe reported yesterday. Representative Martin T. Meehan, Democrat of Massachusetts, said House and Senate negotiators agreed Thursday to put the money in the 1995 military budget, virtually assuring it would win Congressional approval, The Globe said. In addition, Mr. Meehan's office said Raytheon would be given $69 million to modify Patriot launchers, radar systems and other parts so they work with a new generation of missiles being built by the Loral Corporation, the newspaper said. Raytheon, which had 1993 sales of $9.2 billion, suffered a significant blow in April when the Pentagon chose Loral rather than Raytheon to build the post-Patriot generation of interceptor missiles.

Unitrin Inc., facing a hostile $2.6 billion bid from the American General Corporation, said yesterday that it increased its stock repurchase program by as many as 10 million shares, or more than 19 percent of its common stock. The Chicago-based insurance company said that its stock was undervalued and that it expected the repurchases to make the shares more valuable. Unitrin said the buyback would be made with corporate funds, but it could take out a loan to pay for the repurchase if needed. American General, based in Houston, disclosed on Aug. 2 that it was offering $50.375 a share for Unitrin's 51.8 million shares outstanding, a bid that Unitrin rejected. Unitrin's stock, traded over-the-counter, fell 50 cents, to $48 yesterday.

Live Entertainment Inc. shareholders would own a stake of 21 to 28 percent in Carolco Entertainment Inc. under a merger agreement signed yesterday with Carolco Pictures Inc. Under a definitive agreement, Carolco shareholders will receive one share of newly issued Live common stock for each 5.5 shares of Carolco's stock. The exchange ratio will be adjusted based on the market price of Carolco common stock prior to the merger's closing. Los Angeles-based Carolco is an entertainment company that finances, produces and leases movies worldwide. Live, also based in Los Angeles, is an entertainment software supplier, distributor and retailer.

Canon Business Machines Inc. will pay as much as $633,735 in back wages to 32 qualified applicants denied jobs because of their race or gender, the Labor Department said. A Labor Department review of Canon's operation in Costa Mesa, Calif., found a pattern of discrimination against 30 black applicants. A white woman and a Hispanic man who applied for engineering jobs were also discriminated against, the Labor Department said Tuesday. Canon will pay back wages to all of the workers and will make employment offers to 14 of them. Both engineers will receive job offers and back pay exceeding $70,000 each. The agreement follows a review of hiring practices at Canon's Orange County operation that found discrimination against blacks as a class during 1992.

Paine Webber Group Inc., beset by problems in its premier mutual fund and declining profits, pared its assets by 4.3 percent in the first half of 1994. The nation's fifth-largest securities firm reduced its assets to $35.4 billion, from $37 billion at the end of 1993, Paine Webber said yesterday in its quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The cuts included reduced amounts of cash and securities as well as fewer receivables from other brokerage firms. Paine Webber reported a loss of $25 million for the second quarter after charges to shore up its United States Government Income Fund.
